VMCTA – VM CENTRE FOR TRADITIONAL ARTS

Islamic Illumination

Illumination, or Tehzip, refers to light and involves the art of applying gold in painting.

Islamic illumination painting is a traditional art form, often seen in books, and historically used to adorn the pages of the Quran.

This module immerses students in traditional techniques, emphasizing Pakistan’s rich artistic heritage. Building on the foundational knowledge from the Introduction to Methods and Materials and Biomorphic Design modules, this course covers miniature painting, illumination, and fresco painting. Students will learn to design traditional patterns and gain practical knowledge and appreciation of color harmony and symbolism in decorative painting.
